Here is a threadpackardinfo.com/xoops/html/modules/newbb ... .php?post_id=115833#forumpost115833 which touches on some of the various trans which can be modified and installed in various models.

There is a write up by Peter Toet which I believe is posted somewhere on site. I did not find the original post to link the article so next best to finding the original for a link is to repost a copy I downloaded at the time of the original post. No idea if the trans and cane shift he used for the article will provide info specific to what you need.

Fresno,
Thank you the pdf fits the bill.
I thought I remembered the steps but the pictures are invaluable.
I am located in Modesto and frequent Whites auto wrecking as they had the R-9 trans and other parts we needed.
Also Steve in Selma? has a few 48-56's in stock in his yard for parts.
Thanks again

Years ago I installed a stick tranny in a 52 Packard. I got the tranny out of a scrap 53 Clipper. My cousin cut down a column shift from a Ford in the junkyard and we mounted it sideways on the floor. I also installed a four-barrel manifold and carb on that car and lost the starter switch. The automatic gearshift was still in the car and I had removed the backup lights so I just hooked up the wires to the backup light switch on the column. Turn on the key, shift the column shifter to reverse to start the car and then throw that into Park and shift gears on the floor. My wife took her driving test in that car and the state cop said he should pass her just for getting the car moving. We put many miles on that vehicle.

Thanks to everyone.
Plan to start converting our R-9 to a floor shifter next week.
I remembered the general idea but the pictures really answer the questions
I had.
thanks again

Has anyone converted a Packard column shifted transmission to a floor shifted one using an after market shifter kit? This would seem to be a consideration worth investigating.

Keep all the column shifter parts, the next owner will probably want to put that all back.
