when i had lifter problems awhile back, i drained the oil, then refilled with three quarts of 10w30 one quart of marvel, and one quart of diesel fuel. it worked like a charm!

There is one other thing I'll throw into the mix, although I consider it a remote possibility, if the snake oil additive does not work.

The tip of the rocker arm may be severely worn and or the end of the valve stem may be severely worn on the one valve assembly that is clacking. Of course with too much clearance, then the lifter will be topped out when it is on base circle of the cam lobe causing the clack. You could "prove" this by inserting a relatively thin feeler blade (maybe 0.020) between the rocker tip and valve stem end when the engine is running. If the clack goes away, then too much clearance due to wear is the problem.

The fix for this is not pretty since the Packard valve train is not adjustable -- unless you happen to have some Isky adjustable pushrods laying around.

I was attempting to revive the thread. Bring it back to the top of the RFT index at the left of this screen. But the system won't let me go back and delete it.

Did any one else notice on the 2-14 post he said that he noticed a slight poping back through the carb? that would tell me that he has an intake valve not fully closing. which would leave clearance between the rocker and valve stem on the base circle. causing a "clack" when that rocker
slams back down on the valve. And i believe a lifter not pumping up would not cause the popping back as it would cause the valve to not fully open.
