1937 dash trim color

I have a 1937 120-C. I'm thinking this is original. The color that's painted within the metal trim. I got this all rechromed, so this is a before picture. I've seen pictures online where some just leave it all chrome without repainting, I've seen some pictures where they just repainted inside the larger center groove. My question is, is my picture the way it should be painted? And also it may look like it's a darker color than the clock inner gray color. Would it be the same color as the inner color inside the clock to match or is it indeed a black color? Thanks in advance.

Rustoleum gray. Brush on, gently wipe off, leaving some in the grooves.

No, the clock was a purchased item so not necessarily the same color.

It does look like Rustoleum gray, maybe with the shine dulled a bit.

Proud 1953 Clipper Deluxe owner. Thinking about my next Packard, want a Clipper Deluxe Eight, manual shift with overdrive.

Yeah I tried that on a piece, however I sprayed a primer on first to test and carefully wiped off the raised portion of the grooves with acetone and that left the recessed grooves with primer still in them. I was going to follow up with a rattle can paint and repeat with the acetone wipe, leaving the recessed grooves with paint still in them.

The clock, speedometer and instrument panel (oil pressure, fuel, etc) are all the same color. It just looks like the trim is a slightly darker color, but didn't know if that was due to it being painted over the chrome vs being painted over metal. Or if it was indeed a different color.
