Techincally this photo was not taken in Detroit, but rather at the Packard Proving Grounds in Utica (now Shelby Twp,) Michigan. This is but one of a series of photos taken by LIFE magazine photographers on Sept 1, 1940 for an introduction party for the 1941 models.

Party was a huge affair drawing dealers from around the country. A huge tent, stage and bleachers were constructed to hold the crowd. Notice the number of buses used to bring the visitors from the plant in Detroit.

My father went to Detroit for the introduction of the 1941 models. He was most likely at the event pictured. He talked about the dealers visiting the plant and being able to watch the Packard they would be getting assembled. It was a dealer drive-away and the cars would be demonstrators when they arrived at their home dealership. His Packard was a 120 touring sedan, two toned green with radio, heater-defroster and overdrive. It was sold to the Museum of New Mexico-School of American Research. It was used as a staff car for many years. He bought it back in 1960 for something like $35. We used it for a few more years.

Thought of the Taximan when I saw this on eBay. I think it has been discussed before.
