Hi, about to install new valve guides from Max Merritt in a 327 hydraulic valve lifter engine. Other than installing to correct height (I have the correct Packard dealer tool), is anything else required? Do they need to be reamed for any reason? All help is appreciated, thank you!

I've generally not found it necessary to ream new guides after installation but checking the clearances after install will tell you whether or not it's needed. Keep in mind that a component of the total clearance may be wear on the valve stem if used valves are being reused. If the stem wear has resulted in an actual "step" on the stem that you can feel with your fingernail, I recommend replacing the valve with new.

With new guides installed, you should resurface the seats to insure they are concentric with the new guide. A power seat resurfacer preferred.

The whole thread would be worth reading. Short story - you CAN pound them in as described in the manual, but at least I found that, well, you can chip one of the valve guide bosses that way. Better to make yourself a screw press from some threaded rod, and various sized nuts and washers. The process requires much less violence that way. Pictures of how that is done are in the thread as well.
