we are shooting for a combo of correct but "over restored" and built to last. once the car gets driven a bit the base clear tends to take on a higher sheen semigloss look while being easyer to keep clean and semigloss paint being porus doesn't seal as well, the frame was finished in dupont cromapreimer basecoat followed by dupont imron clear from duponts industrial coatings line.

as we had to do some extensive floor repairs we had to strip the metal of much of it's origional heavy tar undercoat. in looking for a correct looking modern replacement, and many tests i decided to go with a single component urethane based spray in beadliner, to acive the right texture it seemed best to spray it at 12 psi, quite a messy job but that is what employees are for.

styled her up with all new bushings and kingpins prior to painting the suspension bits and ended up redesigning the innerds of the lower outer pivot as the origional design started failing at 1000 miles. also prepped up the rear axle housing

after cleaning it all up it prooved to be in quite good shape. replaced the berrings, and redid the felts and she is good as new with the exception that the platers lost the pre-load screw with my order of cad plating and it looks like i will have to machine a new one as i am not having any luck finding anyone with spair stearing box parts.

origional heavy tar undercoat

I wasn't aware of any original factory undercoating (or dealer undercoating either for that matter) by Packard in the 30s. Anyone else have any observations or comments? I'm not even sure I've ever heard the topic brought up before.

same as what was in the doors, rumbleseat lid, rear tub, except all underneith the car. for sound deadening purposes i would assume. the surfaces underneith much of the tar were un treated or protected by anything else yet showed no signs of weather. ie rust on bare metal, wood discoloration ect which indicated it was applyed durring the manufacturing process.
