Have PSW look very carefully for a number stamped directly into the block metal -- most likely within the red boxed area but possibly to either side of the distributor hole just below the box. Depending on how strong the guy who did the stamping was feeling that day the impressions could be faint and blending into the rough casting. Impressions may also be partially filled with grime.

I have no idea how or where marine engines were numbered but if automotive and with a casting date of 46 I would expect the number to start Fxxxxxx. There may be other letters or symbols before or after the number denoting something was not as the engine was originally specified. If there is no number at all found it could have been a service engine.
