This car will cross the auction block sometime today. Looks like a decent car. Any guesses as to what the hammer price will be.
mecum.com/lots/556723/1946-packard-clipper-sedan/ I will post the result when it becomes available. Update: Car just crossed the block a few minutes ago and was a no sale at a high bid of $9,000. Reserve not met. Paint looked a bit dull on the upper sections, particularly the roof section and top of the hood.

Good Morning...I'll bet the car has had an engine change along the way. Most likely the six wore out and an eight was availablle and made a nicer driving car. Ernie in Arizona

Our website says that the car number is outside of the range. But it's valid if you change the 6 to a 5 in the VIN. Go figure.

Seller should have taken the $9K. Figuring the 10% buyer's premium, plus the cost of getting it home from Tulsa, you would be up over $10k. Paint looked very faded on TV, so it is probably worse in person. Then it apparently has the wrong engine. Think the seller made a mistake in not dropping the reserve. Doubt he will get a better offer. The top bid was more than fair.

You would have had to have a crow bar and maybe a sidearm to get nine grand outta Wat for that car.
In other news, Wat would like to find a good body to replace the one he has on his'47 Super. Mine has the usual Briggs cancer.

I checked the VIN against the model identification chart in the Nat Dawes book "The Packard 1942-1962" and the auction car is a Clipper Eight. Here are the various models by body number for 1946 according to the chart. These are for four door sedans:
1682: Six 1692: Eight 1612: Eight Deluxe 1672: Super Eight 1622: Custom Super Eight 1684: Partition Taxi (Six only) 1686: Sedan Taxi (Six only) Here are the Club Sedan model numbers for 1946: 1685: Six 1695: Eight 1615: Eight Deluxe 1675: Super Eight 1625: Custom Super Eight As we all know, there were no 21st series convertibles built by Packard, although a factory prototype is rumored to have existed. Really wish Packard had offered one.

the peach-colored convertible is pretty well documented, was destroyed, and later recreated from a closed car.
I believe Derham did a couple of convertible sedans, I recall seeing a photo.

I also seem to recall that a Clipper convertible was built as a one-off custom for actor Errol Flynn. I think it was by Bohmam & Schwartz. Does this car still exist?
