I posted this question yesterday but it has gotten lost in subsequent posts. When I installed the fuel pump yesterday I used only one thin gasket that came with the rebuild kit (even though it came with two) but afterward I found that it had had what appears to be a thin phenolic spacer and two gaskets. Is that the way it was supposed to have been installed?

I don't know if Henney did something different figuring there would be a lot of slow driving but usually there is just one fairly thick gasket in the sets -- a little under 1/8 thick as I recall. Parts book under gr 9.203 only lists 1 pump gasket.

Thank you Howard. The Henney would be no different in that regard and I also recall a single thick gasket when I’ve done these in the past, yet these kits came with two thin ones.

I cleaned up the clutch pivot a bit and can now clearly see where the anchor goes for the spring. I am not sure what it looks like but the manual makes it appear that it wraps around the whole area, possibly for strength, so if anyone has a photo of the type my car uses, please share so that I can be sure of getting the proper piece!

Of course, the spring is just hanging there in the second photo but it appears that it would take considerable force to get it connected unless the anchor is long.

Have you checked with Napa to see if the thick gasket is available separately? When I put a new pump on the 54 vaguely recall going in and getting one. I think something for a Ford Y block engine would work since they used pumps with the same mounting.

No (it’s a very, very long drive with my shop being far out in the middle of nowhere) but I probably have some somewhere anyway. If it isn’t supposed to have the insulator and two gaskets, I’ll take care of it later.

In the meantime I dug out a rebuilt wiper motor that was probably one of the last to have been rebuilt by Trico themselves. Since it’s been in a box for nearly 50 years, I expect I should put in some kind of lubrication to soften the paddle seal. Would that be something like pneumatic tool oil?

I believe several have suggested vacuum pump oil as being somewhat similar to the Trico oil that was suggested for lube in a 48 or 49 service article.

Here are a couple of photos showing the clutch linkage. Not the best but the link and spring attachment is visible. To get the spring on, I think you will need to depress the pedal and attach the link, spring and the end of the adjusting rod in the bracket. Put the nut back on and raise the pedal and proceed to do the adjustment.

That’s perfect, Howard, thank you! It shows it quite nicely so I should be able to get it by the next time I’m here. Apparently I need a brace for the front exhaust tire too, which connects to the bell housing, as it isn’t there so I can get it at the same time.
