Steel wool in the exhaust pipe to help keep the critters out of the engine. Many people tie a flag on the steel wool to help remember to remove steel wool when the car is started.

Peppermint oil has been found to be a good deterrent to keep pests from getting in the engine compartment. Dilute a few drops of the oil into a water filled spray bottle and spray the entire compartment. Also, a maker of rodent traps sells the oil in small bottles that drip a small amount of the oil over time. Place the bottles around the engine compartment and garage door area.

In addition to disconnecting the battery, I connect a battery maintainer to keep the battery charged.

Store the car with a full tank of fuel to avoid condensation. Treat the fuel with Stabilizer.

Inflate the tires to a higher than normal pressure to help prevent flat spots.
