Is there some trick to remove the clip from this 1956 radio knob? I got it to move a little and see no lip or ledge to keep it from coming out, yet it won’t budge.

Obvious question being why you need to remove the clip?

There's probably tangs on it that dig into the cast metal, preventing removal. If the clip could be removed easily, then the knob could be pulled straight off.

Even in the photo you can see the pitted condition of the knob so I thought the reason would be self-explanitory. I have a beautiful one but it is without the clip. As for digging in, it moves freely and I see no sign of tangs or tabs digging in anywhere and no markings where that had happened on the one without the clip. Of course, it’s difficult to see down inside so hence the question.

As I’ve seen on other similar pieces, the pressure of the shaft against the clip inside the knob causes it to grab and I expected that to be the case here. In any event, it is simple friction that holds the knob onto the shaft.

Thank you but I already have an NOS one. I think I have an idea on the clip but I have minimal tools available so I won’t know for sure for a while.

I gave it a shot and it looks like there's 2 tabs on each side so 4 total. No idea how you could remove one of these non-destructively.

Bad picture but hope this helps.

I had expected and looked for tangs like that but none visible in mine. Maybe a change for 1956?

Using sunlight as the brightest light source source I could think of, no tangs were visible. However, under my iPhone’s light, I think I can see them! Not sure but definitely something is holding it in so I may have to sacrifice the knob to get it out by using a dremel to cut it open.
