I had the same problem with my starter. It would start sometimes, and sometimes it would just click. I took the starter apart and cleaned everything. When I reinstalled the starter, I found that the wire to the S terminal was corroded. I replaced the wire, and haven't had any issues since. I'm sure taking things apart and cleaning helped, but remember to check the wires too.
