Shifter Stop Improvement for 54-56 Twin Ultramatics

You need to get out of that parking spot in a hurry so you snap your gear selector down into Reverse--and nothing happens. Worse yet, now the selector will not move at all.

There is a stop mounted on the manual valve lever inside the trans that is to keep the manual valve from pulling out past the detent stop when you drop into reverse. That would be in the location I circled in blue. That stop can slip out of place (56) or bend (54-55). Once the valve has gone past the last detent there is no recourse other than to drop the pan and fiddle it back into place.

I am now placing a steel L-shaped stop right on the valve body that contacts the valve spool to keep it from pulling out. See the red circle. This is easy to fabricate and mount so that the spool will not travel past the reverse detent. You can tell when the valve is in the reverse position by counting back from Park-N-H-D-L-R, or by noting the far end of the manual valve is about .03" above flush with the valve body.

1/8 inch? Flat.

Nice to have a backup.

With the shift motor not a problem finding R.

Keep it in R while fitting the piece..

Just for reference in the dimension department:

The piece is made from 1" wide steel. The angle is bent about ¾" from the front side of the transmission, as shown. The total height is about ⅝". It is intended that you adjust the angle to adjust the stop location.

The factory transmission bolt is sufficient for re-install. The piece should have a countersink on the side opposite the bolt head, to reduce possible movement.
