I have been fighting the installation of the pump. I have tried to the best of my ability to get the cam lobe in the right position.
When installing the pump it sits up against the block but the holes are about 1/4” to high. Is it possible there are different lengths of arms ? Mine seems to be long and it hits the cam too soon.

Where did you get the fuel pump from?

The arm styles vary widely between makes, models, and years.

Do you have the old pump to compare? Sounds like something isn't correct with your new pump, probably the arm I suspect. Maybe post a picture and someone will recognize if it looks correct.

Once you determine it's the proper pump, be sure to crank over the engine so that the cam lobe is at its lowest which will make things a bit easier.

Here's the arm on my early 49 288. Different from most fuel pumps I've seen and short.

That looks like a prewar arm to me and I have a pump just like it from a 1939.

Hard to say if original but that's what was on the engine I picked up. No numbers to be found anywhere.

I have a 49 with a 288. I just rebuilt the fuel pump. This arm looks identical to the one on mine. As said by Packard Don, "crank over the engine so that the cam lobe is at its lowest which will make things a bit easier."
Hope this helps
