Where did you get the fuel pump from?

Do you have the old pump to compare? Sounds like something isn't correct with your new pump, probably the arm I suspect. Maybe post a picture and someone will recognize if it looks correct.

Once you determine it's the proper pump, be sure to crank over the engine so that the cam lobe is at its lowest which will make things a bit easier.

That looks like a prewar arm to me and I have a pump just like it from a 1939.

Hard to say if original but that's what was on the engine I picked up. No numbers to be found anywhere.

I have a 49 with a 288. I just rebuilt the fuel pump. This arm looks identical to the one on mine. As said by Packard Don, "crank over the engine so that the cam lobe is at its lowest which will make things a bit easier."
