'39 Packard Six - crankcase breather tube fitment issue

Is there supposed to be an o-ring or something like it on the tube where it fits into the engine block? The fit is snug, but the oil is escaping and coating the block fairly efficiently.

No o-ring or seal there. It should be a snug fit so if it isn’t it may have been removed one too many times! Check your filter hoses, though, as they could be the source of the oil. The filter appears to be aftermarket as the stock one probably had steel lines and was mounted in the two holes visible on the head in the photo.

Yank it out, clean it and the hole thoroughly, coat the shank generously with medium Loctite and tap it back in. There is likely a baffle on the bottom to shield the tube from crankshaft spray. The lower tip of that baffle should point away from the crankshaft. Then go do something else for a few hours.

Thanks for the tips. I will try the Loctite repair - seems logical. Oil also gets out around the dipstick fitting - it is very loose, no surprise considering it's age.

I would use Seal-All instead as it better handles the heat. Whatever you use, be sure to orient it properly so that the tab that Ross described points away from the crank. If the tab is gone, you’ll need to replace the pipe and take off the pan to find the missing tab.

Thanks for the tip on the "Seal All" - I will look for it next trip into town. And thanks for the heads-up on the breather tube tab.
