The dampers are of different type construction which explains the thickness variation. Don't remember reading anywhere if a specific damper choice was determined by engine , by year, or by belt width.

Thanks Howard. On the Engines i have here (all 5 bearing 288's) the 48-49 have early Dampers as in the upper photo and have the wider (B?) belt , the 53-54 engines have the later dampers which all have the narrow belt (A section? )

At least I know my options & the damper isnt specific to Manual / auto.

In my Speedster build the Wider belt will look more period but the Narrow pulley V groove is further forward which will line up correctly with my water pump. Too many options.

What confuses me in the photos is the Puller on the Early damper seems to be pulling on the engine , I guess those are L shaped jaws pulling on the back of the damper ? I was wondering how i'm going to get that off.

I don't have a tool catalog later than 50 but that one shows a profile of the two types of pullers. The description might also give an indication of when a particular type damper was used as it seems to be predominately on models that had wider belts. After the 288/327 block came along in 48, with the exception of the 356 engine used on the Super thru 47 and the Custom Eight thru 50, they started going to narrower belts.

Another catalog has instructions for the J2582 and says the "jaws" or "hooks" are placed in the belt groove. Don't have a catalog or supplement later than 50 so not sure if there was any added or changed parts to the basic puller for the 51-4 dampers, Do know 55-6 dampers had a different construction with vulcanized rubber between two metal sections that held them together. A tool similar in principle to the J2582 was used except the puller was a single rectangle piece that had an opening on one long side that went behind the entire damper. The opening was slightly larger than the crankshaft and pulled on the solid metal damper hub.

thank you, armed with that information I'll see if I can cobble up a suitable puller.

A little off topic now but I drew up the design in CAD and got the pieces plasma cut from 1/2" plate. Probably an overkill. I was expecting to have to hammer the bolt for impact, The pulley came right off with no effort at all.

I used this method. Also, I will buy a 3/4-16 x 4" bolt, and a pile of 3/4" washers, on McMaster the next time I need to install a vibration damper, as I don't like to tap them on with a dead blow.
