I just bought a new sending unit from Max Merritt. It is too long for the tank in my 1937 138CD (should be 20 gallon tank).

The new unit is 8.25 in long and my old sending unit is about 6.5in long.

The best I can measure the tank is 36x20x6.5 which translates to 20.25 gallons.

Max Merritt has indicated that they have sold other units for 1937 120s that are the same as what they sent me with no complaints or returns. They also sent me dimensions of the sending unit they sell for 115Cs which seem to match my old unit.

So...do I have a 120 tank or a 115 tank?

What are the dimensions of the 120 and 115C tanks?

Right now, it looks like I need to get what Max Merritt sells for the 115 tank and call it good. I don't know that I need to replace my tank as it is in excellent condition.

As far as I know, the tank has never been replaced. At least not in the time since my dad bought the car in 1960. I think it's unlikely that the tank was replaced prior to that.

Had the same issues on my 1940 120. 21gal original, 18gal replacement. I just bent my pickup tube a little bit more. Yours looks like it needs bent and cut a little off.

Is the resistance section movable on the support? If so, possibly that could slide up a bit and you can cut off the inch and a half and still adjust the rod and float for full and empty. Cut or bend the excess tube length.

The float portion is adjustable, but not enough. Only about a half inch. I could make it work if absolutely necessary. But, I would have to cut the tube and bend the tube carefully.

I’ll be better off just getting the version for the 115C which seems to match the depth of my tank.

I’m really just trying to figure out if I have the correct tank. I won’t replace it regardless since it is in great condition. Really just want to know what I have.

Another topic that I’m adding my final thoughts too in case it may help someone down the road.

I did end up installing the sending unit from Max Merritt that they claim to be for the 115C (smaller tank) and not for the 120C 20 gallon tank.

I am now even more convinced that Max Merritt has dimension wrong and that I do have the correct size tank. My fuel gauge does seem to be quite accurate so I’ve watched as I’ve added gas numerous times.

Just the other day, I was right at half a tank and I put in nine gallons….that brought my guage to just under full. On several other occasions, I refilled when I was right at 1/4 tank. In each case, it took 15 gallons to full. This confirms that my tank is in fact the 20 gallon tank listed in the owner manual.

In any event, if you have 120C and need a new fuel sending unit and are purchasing from Max Merritt, don’t be surprised if you end up needing what they sell for the 115C.

Now, I can’t say this enough….through this process, Max Merritt was very good to work with and had great customer service.

I could not find a replacement sending unit to fit my 1940 110. I found KM Lifestyles Mfg.They rebuilt my old one for less money than a new one in a reasonable amount of time. The phone number is 508 798 2445 ask for Mike. .I recieved it in the return mail and found it to be well done and it matched the gauge on the dash perfectly. I note in the photo that your pick up tube has caroded of and is probably not long enough. That can easily be repaired by extending it with piece of proper sized tubing and the rightsized solder coupling.

My most recent post on this topic was just to “close out” where I ended up. I ended up with the “115C” sending unit from Max Merritt and everything is great… The point being that what MM is selling as being for a 115C actually fits a 120C. What they are selling as for a 120C, is too long.
