What a cool project! Do tell us more of what your plans are!
I know Packard held onto their straight 8 for too long when everyone was going to a V8, but I sure like my 327!

288 was Packard's most underrated engine. Short stroke, husky, dependable, smooth. But with everyone else debuting or readying OHV V-8s, it should've been as good as any inline L-head 8 ever by anyone, which it was.
Good going, GB and a happy 11th day of Christmas to all here gathered. Eleven pipers piping, let alone 12 drummers drumming, sound too busy. As a lifelong Packard compatriot says about V-12s, "too much of a good thing." Eight pipers/drummers, in one tidy row, as in your 288, now you're talking.

The frame is a 29 Chrysler 75 seires, 121" wb they ran at LeMans and Mile Milga, not that it makes any difference to me but its a talking point .
I'm going to build something with the vibe of the screenshots of the Railton replica. I can't do compound curves but have a Peugeot 203 hood to use as the boat tail. _ I can't fathom why they put that exhaust pipe so low -spoils the look of the car , mine will run along the bodywork, my tail will be a little shorter too. It will be road legal here in Australia under either VSI-33 or ASRF regulations, I will never race it but might be fun to enter a hill climb that they run here occasionally.

What a car you will have! Motoring writer L.J.K. Setright, who knew what he was about as few do, fancied Chrysler and Honda over all, his two favorite marques. Hard to dispute that, though Packard's refinement the first half of the century was formidable, and Pierce-Arrow was nonpareil. Railtons have long been a favorite of mine; would have one of their saloons if i could've found one that looked slinky as their catalogs instead of like an ordnance vehicle, but all 1,500 or so, including the dozen or so cobbled from leftover parts after the war, were LHD, tho' some of the latter ones had overdrive since it was available in Detroit Hudsons 1939-on as with Packard. The Hudson splash oiled 254-ci side valve straight 8 was a good mill, Augie Duesenberg selling a marine version in 1940. B u t, a full-pressure oiled, all insert bearinged Packard 288 matchless.
So, from several standpoints, GB, your homage to Brit race/rally tourers will be fantabulous. All luck. Yours, and BigKev's Packuar/Jagard are the only two vintage "retro" rods i respect, being thoroughly in the theme. The deep wine red of the example you posted is lovely; the darker, deep the red, or green, or whatever you select the better. Your taste suggests there'll be no circus wagon colors as too often today. Please keep us posted. Others here, perhaps Ross Miller, Peter Toet, can better advise on the cam but you're probably right, GB. However, anyone needing a camshaft ground or just polished, you can do no better than Dema at Elgin Cams, and please tell him Mike, Walnut Creek, '47 Packard Super Clipper, referred you.
