The first letter is the year, L would be 1953, M 1954. That stopped in 1955 with the V8.
The next number is the engine type. Which can change year to year. But for 1951-1954 here is the info: L4##### would be 1953 327, 5 Bearing with Hydraulic Lifters. There is an engine serial decoder in the Packard Decoder section. Also the above table comes from the Packard Engine Serial Numbers document in the archive.
