My 53 Cavalier's engine number is L413848 and as far as I know it is the original 5 main engine. I'm not sure what information is all contained in my engine number. Between the engines in my Cavalier and the Patrician I believe the Patrician came with chrome piston rings, 9 mains rather than 5, Autolite rather than Delco, and not sure if there were any other differences.

Is there a engine serial number decoder somewhere?

The first letter is the year, L would be 1953, M 1954. That stopped in 1955 with the V8.

The next number is the engine type. Which can change year to year. But for 1951-1954 here is the info:

L4##### would be 1953 327, 5 Bearing with Hydraulic Lifters.

There is an engine serial decoder in the Packard Decoder section. Also the above table comes from the Packard Engine Serial Numbers document in the archive.

Perfect, thank you! I looked around, but didn't find this.

I would have been surprised if my car didn't have the correct engine because everything has been factory correct. Short of a few items such as hose clamps, fuel line, etc. which have, or will, be corrected.

I can’t think of a reason why the crankshaft would be different but definitely the camshaft would be. The hydraulic lifter assemblies themselves, though, would be a direct replacement for solid.

As for the suffix, I don’t have a definitive answer but maybe after a certain engine number, they all had hydraulic lifters in your particular model which, being the case, would not have needed the suffix. Have you had a look through the parts book for any such reference?

Sorry, I meant to say camshaft. Been doing a lot of reading about crankshafts recently so that came out instead of camshaft.
