Good morning my fellow Packard owners!
I have been reviewing the Rochester carburetor literature online but I don't see anything on how to remove the linkage. I have a rebuild kit but I can't remove the carburetor until the linkage is disconnected. Thank you in advance for your help.

Depends. Sometimes attachment methods varied by model or year and often if a linkage piece was lost, damaged, or swapped things not factory were substituted or jerry-rigged. I don't know if there is a guaranteed method you will find on yours so just carefully look for one of the following:

Some linkage pieces have what are called ball end studs and those are usually attached by a stud on the ball end on the rod passing thru a hole in the carb or other linkage piece and being held on by a nut.

Other parts of linkages can be held by a specially shaped rod end clip. Those have a section with holes which goes on either side of the carb piece and the rod bent end passes thru the clip holes and carb piece to be held on by the end of the clip snapping over the rod. That arrangement is very common and is shown iin a few photos on this thread The clips come in right or left hand and both types are shown a few posts farther down. They should come off with just finger pressure pushing the snapped on long end off the rod.

In still other places, the bent end of the rod which passes thru the hole on the carb piece or other linkage piece has a groove near the end of the bent portion..A very small hairpin clip or sometimes a retainer called an E shaped stop ring or one of its many variations slides and snaps in the groove to retain the rod. Sometimes that type clip is so small and fits so close to the piece the linkage operates they are hard to see. Most but not all take some kind of small pointed tool to grab the clip and pull it off to release. There is a similar functioning clip which slides into the groove and then its ends are bent closed with pliers. To open that type, something like a small screwdriver or the pointed tool is forced in the slot to unbend it. Often those are one time use.

Per Murphy's law, the smaller and harder the clip or retainer is to reach and work with to release, the farther it will fly when it snaps loose and is usually the easiest to get lost or fall somewhere even more inaccessible.

It's just held on by a single nut.

On the accelerator pump. Some used small hair pin clips
Others a clip you need to spread apart..


Remove power brake vacuum hose. Heat riser for automatic choke.

And gas line to carb..

Carb studs nuts are 1/2 inch.

Yes, I agreed with Howard, Mine was held in place by a clip that held the ball an socked in place.
