Question on reassembly of pump. This valve won't drop in like the others have. Do I need to grind the housing or tap it down?

Kit didn't include a new seal retainer. Do I reuse the old one? Or is that what these brass rings are for?

Be careful about tapping too hard on the valves, they are fairly delicate. I'm assuming the valves are tight in the spots where they were staked? (Little red marks on the picture below.)

Maybe you can take a socket, that's close to the same size, and tapping with a hammer and punch from the opposite side you round those areas again so they're not so tight? The casting is fairly soft.

My kit had the regular retainers, but if those rings are the right size, that must be what you're to use. There's no other place for those to go that I can think of.

I usually use a triangular gasket scraper to remove the nubs but you can use a Dremel or whatever else you might have handy to scrape them away. Once the new valves have been installed, you'll need to swage them in place again.

A couple of struggles but fuel pump complete. Have to take care of some things but should be able to install in about two hours.

Yay, good job! Did you work the arm and give it a test?

Working on old vehicles and struggles go together like peas and carrots!

Keep us posted on your progress!

Held the arm for pre-load. Also operated the arm to verify pressure/seal. Seems good. Thank you all. I'm very grateful. I'll update you once I'm back in the garage.

Nice work. You learned a new skill and now you know how the fuel pump/vacuum pump work. If you tackle the carburetor (not terribly difficult) then you will essentially have a new fuel system front to back that should serve you well.
