Oil bath cleaners seem like they are free flowing but in order to work properly, they first restrict the air flow to increase it's velocity. Then the fast moving airflow is forced into a 180 degree turn. The dirt particles in the air are heavier and their momentum carries them straight into the oil where they are trapped. The air then passes through a coarse and not very effective filter medium and goes into the carburetor. The weakness of oil bath filters is in filtering out fine material.
While the paper filter impedes air flow to some degree, the path followed by the air is straighter and less restricted and the paper filter is a much better filter. The result is less dirt and engine wear.

After reading some much earlier threads on the subject, I am wondering if anyone has come up with a suitable replacement for the 358 V8 oil bath housing / filter?
I had thought this would be a simple matter, however, I have found nothing is simple when dealing with a 70 yr old car! On that's right, Happy Birthday Clipper Constellation !

As for the oil bath air filter, one question would be why you'd want to replace it? But you can measure the carb opening dia. and just go on Summit Racing and probably find plenty of aftermarket replaceable element filters. 😀
