Don,
Have them use (h/w store) clear Shoe Goo...I use this on -40 to +120 (Wyoming outdoor) applications, not just fixing shoe fabrics, leather, rubber. It holds better than any upholstery or other contact or adhesives. It stays flexible when cured and you can remove the covering (with force) so you can recover a screwed up job. It will not weep through the fabric and really holds. Apply with a shaped tongue depresser to get it on smoothly at a "medium" (not gloppy) thickness. I have a 20 year history with this stuff and I only use it on difficult rubber, fabric repairs/jobs when nothing else is suitable. Once the basic fabric is applied and cured, you can do a second light dress up at the edge where the fabric meets the backside of the button to provide even more durability in a "fillet". Once cured (1 day for full properties) this stuff holds like nobody's business...My ranch boots/shoes/muck boots DO NOT come loose after repair in mud/ice/snow/sleet/fire/brimstone (you get the idea). Acetone does remove/clean up if needed. Since these buttons are a one way deal, dont waste your time on other adhesives for this type of situation. My 2.71828 cents, Dan
