Yes, it's a misconception to say that if it's a California car, it must have no rust! California has just about every kind of climate and micro-climate possible from coastal to desert so it would depend where the car spent it's life. I grew up in Sacramento which gets very hot in the summer but it also has deluges of rain in the winter although no snow. On the other hand, it's often thought that cars from Oregon or Washington must automatically be rusty but where my Oregon shop is in the High Desert it is very dry with often single-digit humidity and without salted roads in the winter. When it snows, lava is in abundance here so that's ground and put down. All of Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon are, for the most, part dry as I'm sure kevinpackard will attest.
