I use a C clamp to hold that front brass piece in when removing the generator. Off the top of my head I think by 36 that system was gone as that is about the time that generators were ran off the fan belt. I have a 32 so I'm more familiar with the earlier set up. J.

You are right on John. 36 was the last year for the timing chain brass holder thing. Any and all advice welcome....sure don't want to drop the chain/gear.
