I picked this up at an old car garage sale (mostly Ford stuff) thinking it might be right for my 39 but it is for the 1940 models. Working speedometer no trip odometer, $50 postage paid to US addresses.

The cool thing about the 1940 speedometer was the pointer which changed color from green at low speeds to yellow when going faster, then to red at higher speeds.

Did it? Is there some background visible through the arrow? Same feature was available on my Mopar, but after all the years the different colors look just the same - an unidentified share of gray

The pointer is plastic and there is a window behind it that rotates with it with three different colors of Mylar film along with a stationary light. As the pointer rotates, it passes over the colors making the plastic needed glow. The colors are subtle, or at least they were on mine, probably due to fading but I imagine they were much brighter when new or reworked.

I had no idea. You learn something new every day (if you are lucky).
