If the belt is too thin, it will ride down in the groove vs ride on the sides of the pulley like it supposed to, which can then cause it too slip.
If the top of the belt isn't sitting above the top of the pulley, then it's probably too thin or worn. Besides a partially a clogged radiator, water pump with improper impeller clearance will cause it to move significantly less coolant that normal. Also, check the timing.
