Speedometer cable installed

The cable installed easily into the transmission but it didn’t work.. It slipped in quite easily to the transmission opening.
I thought I would have felt something matching into the transmission. I checked the dash end also and it seemed to be in okay.

There should be a speedo cable receiver pinion in the transmission. Those were replaceable to account for different axle ratios.

Yours may be missing.

I would guess this is Packwagon's '48 station sedan, 3 speed with overdrive.

Your original cable broke, correct? Did you fix what caused the cable to break? It would most likely be the speedometer itself is seized.

You could disconnect the cable from the speedometer and see if you can turn it by hand, that would let you know if it's properly engaged at the transmission end. You could do the same check with the speedometer end by disconnecting the cable from the transmission and trying to turn it while it's connected to the speedometer.

Did you closely compare your new cable to your old one to make sure they were identical?

If you can post some pictures that may be helpful, someone may be able to spot the issue.

Yup, find and fix the root cause first. Cables don't just break except from severe rust or such.
