am I right in thinking that the shaft and bearing press out forwards by pushing on the shaft centre of the impeller..? the shaft at the impeller end looks to be a smaller diameter.

I can't really figure out what you mean by this. Once you press off the pulley hub then you will have the body, bearing assembly, seal, and impeller as one assembly. You need to press the bearing assembly out of the body and in doing so the seal and impeller will stay attached to the bearing assembly. Then once those are separated from the body, you might be able to press the impeller off of the bearing shaft.

You will have to be extremely careful to use some sort of tool that only puts pressure on the brass insert of the impeller and distributes it evenly. The impeller is extremely brittle and I will honestly be surprised if this works without it breaking even doing it the most optimal way.

Thanks again. I see this now, after removing the hub I can slide something over to press on the bearing while supporting the body around the flange face to hopefully prevent the casting from breaking and press everything out. Then find a way to get the impeller off the shaft without breaking that. As I said I have nothing to lose so I'll give it a shot... Cheers, Dave.

You don't even have to press on the bearing itself as the bearing races are built into the shaft. You can press the bearing out and have the seal come with it simply by pressing on the shaft. 😀

I’m following this to try to upstanding it for my own car. I need to change the impeller on a 1956 pump and it was explained to me in my 1956 Clipper blog but I didn’t quite follow it. Also, the pump is rebuilt and has no groove for the retainer so there isn’t one.

Yeah the retaining clip isn't necessary as long as the bearing is a press fit in. At least, that's how they are all rebuilt nowadays.

Well I tried... Got the use of a hydraulic press today, the pump shaft pressed out of the pulley hub quite easily.

I then supported the pump body on 4 small steel blocks positioned between the bakelite impeller blades so as not to push on the flange outer which could break and checked the impeller wasn't touching anything. The bearing, seal and impeller also pressed out smoothly but I found the impeller was so brittle pieces had just broke off for no apparent reason and that's before I had tried to remove if off the shaft.

A replacement pump or repair kit with impeller now on the shopping list. Wouldn't care but the bearing was still OK, but maybe a good thing now knowing how brittle these maybe 70 year old plastic type impellers are I would feel better knowing there was a cast iron one in there...

Thanks for all help and advice...

Yeah that was my experience as well, the stress caused by trying to remove it in basically any manner will make the thing just break in pieces.
