Hello, Owen_Dyneto - Why is it necessary to place the adjustment shims behind the inner race? And not on the outer race? The trial and error adjustment by adding/removing shims on the inner is quite difficult, as the inner race can be very difficult to remove because there is very little area to get "purchase" on the race to pull it out. When disassembling my axles, I found a shim on both inner and outer race onthe right axle (that has about 0.006-0.008" end play and will require a bit more shim. The left axle had zero detectable end play and will need removal of one of the shims behind the inner race. (the left inner race was nearly impossible to remove).
In the course of doing this repair/maintenance work of the rear axle, I have had success in identifying interchange part numbers for the seals, including the pinion seal. I will create a post with the experiences with the seals and interchange numbers for modern seals with relatively low cost. Quote: Owen_Dyneto wrote:

If the end play is excessive, what first occurs to me if you try to correct by adding shims against the outer race at the backing plate is that you'll be moving the shaft inboard and thus, moving the drum closer to the backing plate and therefore altering the relationship between the drum surface and the brake shoes. Some careful measuring should tell you whether you can get away with this, but generally I'd have a reluctance to go against the procedure recommended by the factory though it is awkward.

Thanks for the clarification. I had considered the shift of axle/brake drum vs backing plate, but was unsure of the impact.
Any suggestions for "grabbing" the inner race for removal? On one side I was able to use a pick to tug the race away a bit, slowly. The other side was next to impossible to remove.
