In Riki's picture you can seen the brake band down in by the brake band lever.

You can also see that Riki has replaced the brake band lever shaft so as not to have the weakening grove and added spacers to either side of the brake band lever to do the job of positioning. I had a broken low range brake band lever shaft and did the same. Intriguingly, the low range brake band lever shaft is smaller in diameter than the reverse brake band lever shaft which seems odd to me as in gear start and later transmissions those using drive would be likely to engage low much more than reverse.

OK. Ican see both bands. The one I have Left alone I believe looks as it should. The other had a pawl like lever in place, (not hanging down) The other was being held up. When I moved it the parts connected to it became very loose. I can move the band with my fingers. I did take some photos, but won't be able load them with from my son. We have session Scheld for tonight. Hope to be able to post them on Monday.

The band actuator has a little pin in it that can be damaged if the band is ever installed not centered in the pin. So as long as the pin looks okay, just get the band set back in it properly then immediately mount the servo piston in place to hold it in place permanently. Then set the band to 20 ft lb minus 1 and 3/4 turns. You can then reach and feel that the band is held in place properly.

Note that you should also make sure that the band is not warped. The ends of the sides of the band should be completely parallel to each other and not offset.

The reason why the shaft is thicker is because the reverse servo piston is a larger diameter and thus transmits more force. The reason for that is because you have to have more clamping force on the band for successful operation in reverse than in low. The reason for that is because the low band has to take the difference in torque between the engine and the driveline. The reverse band has to take the sum of the torque between the engine and the driveline because not only is there a gear reduction but you are also switching direction.

In other words, the low range band has to absorb 82% of the engine torque, whereas the reverse band has to take 263% of the engine torque. Hence, even though reverse is only used at low speeds and low torque levels, the need for more robust components.
