I have 2 pre-WWII cars on a Hagerty policy and I don't recall them specifically asking if I had a garage. I believe the term "garaged" is used when asking for the location (physical address) where the car is to be kept. I do have a garage, FWIW. It's larger and nicer than my house. I suggest you call Hagerty and discuss your situation and see what they have to offer.

I know Hagerty and American Collectors Insurance both ask if the car will be garaged when providing a quote. I don’t know that they require the car to be garaged, but I believe they do adjust the premiums based on that. That is, the premiums are likely lower if the car is garaged.
I think it’s at least worth calling to find out.

If you've had your Hagerty policy for your vehicles awhile now, you'd best keep quiet about it and don't poke the bear. The requirement now exists, they were crystal clear about it and there are no exceptions. Additionally, they now require photos of the vehicle they're insuring parked in the garage in which it will be stored. So, on to "regular" insurance. Anyone?

Thank you. I called Hagerty prior to posting. They won't even give you a quote without first knowing where the car will be stored, and if you say anything other than a garage, you might as well hang up the phone. They also now require photos of the vehicle in the garage space where it will be stored. That rules them out, along with Grundy. I've not talked to American Collectors Insurance before, I should try them. What a hassle ![]()

I just changed all my cars from LiMu Emu (Liberty Mutual) to Progressive. My agent pointed out to me with Liberty I did not have full coverage on either the Packard or the GTO or evening agreed on Stated amount.
Going from Liberty to Progressive our rates went down around $1500. This is included full coverage and the Stated amount coverage on the Packard and GTO.

I spoke with a Hagerty representative this morning, and he indicated that you could obtain coverage absent a garage.

Thanks Tom. Looking likely I'll stick with Progressive which is where I have my other modern cars.

I'm not sure what city/state in the Union you live in, but it must matter. Here in the L.A., California area, I was informed on several occasions that they require it. And the latest was yesterday when I was speaking with an agent who had initially quoted me a Hagerty policy, only to backtrack and inform me it wasn't possible when I told him where the car would be kept. ![]()

Why did you tell him? As a licensed California VIN Verifier, I always tell customers, especially the friendly and chatty ones (I’m that way myself), to keep quiet at the DMV and tell them only what they ask and no more. The same with insurance. If they ask where it’s garaged, just presume they mean the address where it’s kept and don’t volunteer that it’s not in a garage.
