I can't speak for insurors, but I'd think a high declared or agreed value car with full coverage and no garage might be a problem, especially in thunderstorm-prone areas. A shipping container might be a low cost alternative in some areas. I'd want it ventilated.

So many variables.... condition, value, coverage limits, rarity, jurisdictional requirements, and many more. In this area, if you own the car, insurance requirements are fairly minimal, and collision/comprehensive or "full coverage" is not required.

It started with Progressive, and another vintage car I own, not the Packard. Based on the age of that car, they immediately suggested Hagerty would be a better fit. I don't have a dedicated agent and went directly to Hagerty.com.

Once I entered my address, their online form asks: will the car be kept in a covered garage? And among the possible other choices than a covered garage was "driveway". I selected that option because insurance fraud is a real thing, with my minimum liability in such a situation being a complete dismissal of any claim I might have, thousands in wasted premium $, with no further recourse.

After that, the site informed me Hagerty would not be able to insure my car. I didn't understand why they were declining to insure me, and I figured it might be a mistake. So I contacted them by phone directly and spoke with their customer service reps, who identified the driveway as the issue. So, pretending I was able to choose to keep my car in my garage (the car does not fit), I told them no problem, I could keep it in the garage. Then, they informed me they'd "need pictures of the car in the garage" to verify vehicle storage requirements. That ended the conversation.

Coincidentally, at the same time, I had also contacted an insurance agent referred by a friend. They actually came back to me with a premium quote on a Hagerty policy. They had not asked me where I'd be storing the car other than my address. I think it would have been better if I'd gone through an agent with a vested interest in writing me a policy, vs. corporate customer service who are looking to dot every 'i', and cross every 't' before writing a policy.

Lesson 'somewhat' learned.

I don’t recall them needing pictures of my car, but I selected garage right from the start.

For others, comments, Hagerty did ask me if my car would be garaged, but the they did not require any photos of the car or the garage.

My current policy declarations page reads the following:


"Vehicle Type: Auto
Garaging: Private Garage, Barn, Pole Building"


They don't seem to be very particular.

My car is kept in a very well built, well-insulated, insulated, mouse-tight building with a cement floor.

Some people garage their antique vehicles, boats, etc at a location other than their residence.
