Instead of having the special head nut with an Allen socket on the shaft end, wonder if you could kind of duplicate the original style by using an ordinary set screw long enough to reach inside the door with enough extra to glue or weld a nut on the end opposite the socket. Might need to grind and round the nut to mimic the original head diameter but that should be fairly easy.

That's not a bad idea! Worst case scenario I have to pull the door apart so I can work from both sides to mount the mirror. Should be a one time project, I hope!

If you're pulling the door apart you install these then I would also install some sound deadening in the door at the same time. Just scrape off all the old stuff and clean it out of the door. Then stick on some self-adhesive type. It only needs to cover about half of the area of the outside wall of the door to make a big difference.

That's an excellent idea, but your 2 months too late, been there done that! LOL

I went to scrape off the old sound deadener, but it was solid and not coming off. So I cleaned everything up, t4reated the surface rust, gave it a couple of coats of POR-15 and then later sprayed the bottom with 3M Cavity Wax. Good to go for another 72 years plus!

And I'm not going to have to take my door apart, check out my next post!

I struck gold today!!!

This is the special screw and washer that secures the factory side mirror for 51-54. The washer is similar to a lock washer so it kinda screws into the hole in the door. It has a little ring to keep the washer from sliding up the bolt when your screwing it into the hole. One one car in the entire bone yard had a factory mirror and it was the last car I checked!

If you see a car with the holes like this in the belt molding, and the interior panel is still on the door, there is likely one of these bolts inside the door!

I can confidently say that Packard only intended side mirrors to be mounted to the belt molding on 51-54 models. There was no bracket for the 51-54 side mirrors.

54-55 side mirrors were designed to be mounted to the belt molding, or the fender. The did have a bracket and if mounting them to the belt molding it would have been a more involved process than the 51-54 style as the belt molding would need to be removed to install the bracket.

And that's all I have to say about that.

It’s clear that still do not understand. You need to remove the door card to put the screw through as it goes from the inside and you’ll have to have someone hold it in place while you put the retainer back on. The large hole in the photo goes only through the belt molding but there is a smaller one directly behind it through the door for the screw which I already said several times in your Facebook posts with the same question. In other words, the mirror attaches to the door, not to the belt molding.

Some of this is correct, and some is not.

Yes, the mirror attaches to the door, that is, the screw goes through both the belt molding and the outer door panel. The picture posted earlier by BDeb clearly shows this.

No, you do not need to remove the door card to install the mirror on the belt molding for 51-54, but you do on 55-56. 55-56 utilizes the bracket which gets attached to the door under the belt molding.

Mo, the 15/32" hole does not only go through the belt molding only, the door also has a 15/32" hole. I was there, that's my picture! Drilling a 15/32" hole through the belt molding and outer door panel is precisely what the service manual says to do. (See earlier post from BDeb)

The washer is slightly larger than the 15/32" hole and threads through the holes from the outside. (Review the instructions posted earlier by BDeb and it will make sense.)

This is a fairly ingenious design that allowed for a quick clean installation. Much better than the aftermarket mirrors that had visible screws, or that clamped onto the door, like the pictures below from a couple of other cars in the boneyard.
