I'd replace the chain and both timing sprockets. The front seal is probably due for replacement, too.

I assumed it was the remains of a chain key.

If it is pieces of the timing chain you found, I would look for other problems such as something loose, wrongly assembled, or worn behind the timing chain cover that would have allowed the chain sides to be able to rub something in such a way that the rivet head ends could wear enough to allow links to come off. If the chain itself wore from old age then it and the sprockets have probably stretched and worn to the point I am surprised the engine was able to run well enough to be properly timed.
