It's a relatively light sprint that mainly keep the clutch arm from rattling but you should try to find and install one.

You can use a shorter spring, extended with stiff wire. It just needs to have enough stretch to accommodate the necessary range of movement.
Some hardware stores still stock assorted individual springs.
