I am going through a tool box that I inherited from my Wife's Grandfather. He was a engineer, machinist, and did quality control in his later years. So this was one of his "work" tool boxes. It was has been locked up for the last 10 years or so. I had to break into the box to see what was inside.

Anyway it contains a bunch of tools and measuring devices related to his Quality Control and Machinist work. I am not a machinist, so I really don't know what half of this stuff is or is used for. I would imagine that I am going to try to rid of some of this stuff as I have no immediate use for it, not do I have the storage space. So if you guys can help me ID what this stuff is, and if anything is worth putting on eBay, then please let me know.

I am going to keep a few things and have already put those aside (not shown in the following pictures) like the various taps and dies. Metal rules, angle finders, drill bits, etc. But the rest of this stuff is going to eBay or Craigs List one I know what it is and if there is any value to it. I hate to made it year sell fodder and just basically give it away for nothing.

U will need ALL of them for various shop projects and engine/trans building.

From top to bottom:
Inside mics. For measureing bores like engine cylinders, bushings etc. VERY IMPORTANT to keep.

Dial indicator. for measuring end play of shafts etc.

Pin vices for holding very small drill bits. KEEP THEM.

pic 4711 not sure.

Small bore mics for measuring very small holes. PRECISION.

Edge finder. Probably not worth eBaying. Not alot of general shopuse.

Points for dial indicator in second pic above.



V blocks. VERY INMPORTant for drilling holes in the centre of shafts and other uses where u need to hold round things for centering. Can streighten small shafts.

Lathe tool bits. U will need these if u get a lathe. SEvERAL of them are Carbaloy bits (very expensive) used for for cutting extremely hard metal such as valve stems. DO NOT DROP THEM they break like glass.

Center drills and burrs etc. Centre drills good for starting holes into broken off bolts in the center.

Thread measure wire set. Not sure. They are most likely precision and can be used to measure small orifices such as carb jets.

****** KEEP ALL MIC's. U will need them for measureing shafts and use with internal mic's in pic 1.

Pic 4725: scale, calipers, depth gauge. angle gauge. Good for measuring things. Just keep them.


clamps for V blocks above.

4727 ????????

Wooden handle is a 3hree corner file ground into a bearing scraper. Used to fit bearings both babbit and inserts for VERY HIGH precision fits. Don't let anytone tell u that is a butcher way of doing it. It's the only RIGHT WAY to do it. Time consuming yes.

I have at least one of every tool u pictured EXCEPT the pin vices, small bore mics, V-blocks and clamps. If u decide to eBay them let us know the auction link. My advice is to keep all of it. The mics are used extensively in engine building and transmissions etc.

Value depends on brand. HIGH DOLLAR brand is LS Starett, Slocumb and a couple of others i can not remeber rite now. Craftsman, General are kind of economy grade but are still good quality. KInd of like Snap-on v Craftsman.

Thanks for the info. The pouches on picture 4711 are marked as "Radius Gauges".

Kev, if you decide to sell all that I'd be interested in most of it. I don't have any inside mics or a dial indicator yet, and the other stuff like Keith said would come in real handy.

I'm interested in offers. I just looked online at the Mitutoyo and Tumico range in prices from $30 to over a $100. Also some of the pieces are marked LS Starett.

Not looking to make a bunch of cash off of these, just a fair used price.

Dial 1-800-use-enco and tell them to send u a catalouf of machinist tools. They also have a web-site.

Is the rectangular base of the dial indicator magnetic????? If not then that will tend to decrease value.

One problem is that over the last 15 years places like Enco have offered such tools (better than harbour freight quality but not as good as LSS or Slocumb) at relativerly cheap prices compared to 20-30 years ago when only hi $ brand names were available or Craftsman.

I believe the that base is magnetic.
