Is anyone aware of a replacement air lifter element for 51-54 Packards that use the NON-oil bath air filters?
The one on my '54 (Flying saucer style), its filter element is sheading metal strands and I dont want those getting sucked down into my carb. I ofter wonder if a foam style element could be retrofitted to work between the wire mesh holders. Attach file: (5.49 KB)

On the rare occasion when these need to be replaced and you want to keep authentic appearance, most people and restoration shops just form a new one from "Chore Boy" copper kitchen pot scrubbers, almost indistinguishable from the original if you work carefully. And don't forget to keep it well-oiled.

Thanks for the information. They were originally copper colored?

Yes, thru the 40s and 50s the non-oil bath elements consisted of a spiraled-like mesh of copper turnings (like long lathe turnings) contained within a steel retainer made from perforated steel sheet. The oil bath type generally used horsehair.

BTW I had taken to finding the closest in the parts store and cutting in shorter with a tin snips. Diameter is possible but they closest is too tall.

I was thinking of trying the same thing. Its always the filter height that seamed to be the problem with trying to find a modern paper replacement.
