On my car, which is six years newer, the wedge was tapered and had to be driven out. I also had problems, until I realized that the direction the pin gets driven out depends on which side of of the car it's on. One side was driven through the back, the other side was through the front. I don't remember which was which, now.

Having never done this before the following is how I replaced my king pins and bearings, lots of trial and error.
Remove wheel. Undo split pin and retaining nut. Remove dust cover ring. Withdraw wheel hub. Undo nuts and bolts holding brake shoe plate. Disconnect steering arm and tie rod. Undo top bolt over king pin. The knuckle should drop down with small tap. Remove top bearings. Remove bottom bearings, tap out through 2 holes in bottom. Tap out wedge holding king pin in place. Rest bottom of king pin on axle stand and use weight of car and drift to remove pin. Reassemble! Check spacers under top bolt are sufficient to allow new king pin to engage fully in lower bearing.

Didn't you have needle bearings to contend with?

Being a non-tech type I'm not sure what you mean by needle bearings. The bearings were round type in a two part shell.
