Don's 1937 1090 138CD Limo

Well I guess my Packard disease has had a recurrance and I finalized a deal today on another 37 CD. Its fairly rare and there is work to be done on it. It looks completely stock but it is powered by a 454, front disc brakes, can't wait to see that conversion as it allowed the keeping of the stock wheels, and to end it all a Caddy rear end. I am calling it my derodding. I have all the parts to convert it back to stock, as it is a standard 120 drivetrain with just a little longer driveshaft. For a Limo is pretty plain, I am going to add a spare Banjo and a trunk 120 emblem I have in stock, to spruce it up a little bit. It is going to take me about a month to bring it home, as I am traveling a lot for work and going back home to Kansas for a week to help out my mother and see some old Packard friends there. One of which was my mechanic and parts supplier for the last 35 years. He also is going to do the work on this Limo so its going to Kansas right off. as I am am working on our Sports CD Coupe here in Alabama. The Business Coupe is going to have to go as three is one too many. Yes I am going to add this car to the list but will wait till its in my hands before I do.

Same as my Grandfather's. 1937 138CD exactly. Last time I road in it was to his funeral. I will follow this restore greatly!


p.s. How do you find all these 37s!!

Your Grandfather's had the divider window also? I have seen some without the window. I actually got the remains on one my son brought back from Canada. I got the cowl and one side.

Though I would include my first Packard I owned with a divider window. Also is the longest Packard I have ever owned. It was a 1938 1601 166" wheelbase Henney Ambulance. It must have been used in a auto show as on window was etched "Packard World's Finest Ambulance" It had a wooden Cab to hold medical supplies. Which I was on an ambulance service for 8 years and always thought during that time in history you put the patient in back and drove like the wind to the hospital. I had a young family at the time and about 1981 or 82 my wife towed it to the front yard and sold it. It went to a person in Hutchinson Kansas to hot rod auuuuuggghhh and I never saw it again. (I also divorced the wife).

Today I worked on getting a chassis ready to drive to Kansas during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. The car should already be at the Great Plains Packard Club mechanic in Maize. This chassis has the needed parts to convert it from the Rod back to original. Here are a couple of pics of the chassis.

It's getting closer to the point where I am going to have the Limo shipped to the mechanics house. I am adding a few more pictures of the car as it is now. There is one interesting picture of the dash and a cane shifter. I thought it is a dummy and serves no purpose but the ex owner told me that it is a functional shifter for the T400 Transmission. I wonder how it was done and I am going to have my son in Wichita take some pictures before the Auto exorcism is completed and a straight 8 is back in the engine compartment. shoot I might even save all the parts and install in a 37 120C sedan I have extra. (but probably not as I have the 2 37 projects going and am a working man).

However I do think it was a pretty clean conversion and the one dash picture shows the only difference is the Chevrolet brake pedal and the absence of the clutch pedal. Even kept the toeboard mostly intact.

Update:

There was some hitches in transportation from Renton Washington to Maize Kansas. It looks like the pickup date is Nov 23rd and the delivery date is the 30th at their latest. I have a load of parts to mate with the Limo but I am waiting until the car is actually there in Maize before I take the rebuilt engine and chassis to Kansas. I am showing the ID plate I received from the past owner. Looks like the dealer lost his No 1 stamp and used his I stamp 3 places. I am also including a picture I have had for 30 years showing a 37 120 being serviced. I was told it came from the factory sent to dealers along with information on increasing service sales. If the powers at be would like to move that picture to a more appropriate place go ahead.

It's a known fact that Packard used the capital letter "I" instead of "1" for ID purposes.
