Along the lines of the missing SSBs that Brian pointed out, we are also missing several Server Letters (the pre-war name for the Service Conselors). Here is what we are missing:

Service Letters (Issued Twice a Month)

1927 Vol 1 All 24 Issues and Index Missing
1928 Vol 2, 1-4 & 6 - 24 & Index Missing
1929 Vol 3 All 24 Issues and Index Missing
1930 Vol 4, 1-7 & 9 - 24 & Index Missing
1931 Vol 5 All 24 Issues and Index Missing
1932 Vol 6 All 24 Issues and Index Missing
1933 Vol 7, No. 3 - Missing
1933 Vol 7, No. 5 - 14 (partial pages, need all pages)
1933 Vol 7, No. 14 -15 Missing
1933 Vol 7, No. 18 Missing
1933 Vol 7, Index Missing
1934 Vol 8, No. 17 - 24 Missing
1934 Vol 8, Index Missing
1935 Vol 9 All 24 Issues and Index Missing
1937 Vol 11, No. 1 -2 Missing
1937 Vol 11, No. 19 Missing

The missing ones between 1938 and 1945 I am in the process of scanning.

Also any other Pre-War documentation is requested. These include, but are not limited to General Letters, Parts and Accessory Bulletins, Trade Letters, etc.

That's great news!

I went back and updated the MIA list in the 57-58 Intro text to reflect the recent contribution of Issue Nos. 319 and 320. (Thanks, Howard!)

However, I won't be able to download those new issues until sometime next week, when I have access to a WiFi hotspot with sufficient speed; all I have here at home is dial-up. I should be able to add another 10 topics from those two SSBs alone.

Meanwhile, with all these addtional Service Letters coming, a lot of forethought needs to be put into groupings for future installments before jumping in with work on the content. It came naturally for the postwar cars, which follows a line that runs somewhere between the shop manual and parts book coverage, but the coverage of the prewar parts books seems to meander all over the place.

For example, while there's a 1935-41 parts book and one for the 1942 non-Clipper models, there are also separate editions for the 1937-39 Super 8 and V12 models, the 1932-36 12 Cylinder models, and the 1933-36 8 Cylinder models.

Please note that the 1957-58 Service Index Introduction has been revised again as regards SSBs that are missing from our collection, yet contain topics on the 1957-58 cars.

Unfortunately, in my haste to include that short list, I had overlooked a few issues, but included others that may not actually apply to this grouping. Yet, the two SSBs, Nos. 319 and 320, that HH56 provided DO have relevant topics.

The Index provided by SSB No. 341 only covers Issues No. 311 through 339. While Nos. 356, 358, 359 and 360 ARE missing from our collection, I only know for certain that those have topics applicable to Detroit-built Packards (through 1956). I do know, however, that SSB No. 355 includes a topic regarding a problem with the power steering cooler on '58 Packard Hawks.

If you already checked your collection against the original MIA list, please check again as it has changed significantly. I apologize for any confusion or extra work that this may have caused.

Just a note to advise that SSB Nos. 319 and 320 have been integrated into the 57-58 Index. Although 4 of the 10 topics have been weeded out as not applicable to the '57 Clippers, the rest are highly relevant.

New topics cover:

* hand brake handle clearance
* power brake noise
* body and engine paint formulations
* Flightomatic parts specific to the Clipper
* supercharger planetary drive service
* performance/economy modifications to the carburetor.

More topics will be (quietly) added as additional documents become available.

Meanwhile, the addition of these two SSBs also resolves the missing links for 10 topics in the 55-56 Index.

Caught in the cusp between holidays, I've been looking back through the site's collection of Packard Service Letters and Counselors for 1941-47 in preparation for the next installment of the Service Index.

Yet, a question regarding Service Technical Bulletins lingers from my previous work on the 48-50 content. Though some past discussion - both public and private - pointed to 1948 as the first year for STBs, I had found specific references in the Service Counselor to other types of bulletins from 1946.

Looks like the real answer was under our noses for some time. The September, 1945 issue of the Service Counselor (SC Vol 19, No. 9) announced a revision to the way service information would be distributed to dealers, including the launch of a new Service Technical Bulletin series. However, it's not (yet) clear whether any STBs were actually issued that year, and Packard didn't exaclty followed its planned format for issue numbering of STBs until 1949. Not sure if any annual index was published prior to 1951.

So, here's an updated list of MISSING STBs that are needed to help complete the site's collection and feed our online Service Index:

Service Technical Bulletins

45T-?? (Dealer) - ALL issues, if any published
45T-?? (Zone) - ALL issues, if any published

46T-?? (Dealer) - ALL issues
46T-?? (Zone) - ALL issues

47T-?? (Dealer) - ALL issues
47T-?? (Zone) - ALL issues

48T-?? (Zone) - ALL issues (appears that we have all Dealer issues)

49T-4 (Zones)
49T-6 (Zones)
49T-7, Dealer 5
49T-12 (Zones)
49T-14 (Zones)
49T-19 (Zones)
49T-21, Dealer 16
49T-25 (Zones)
49T-30 (Zones)
49T-34 (Zones)
49T-37 (Zones)
49T-40 (Zones)

50T-1 (Zones)
50T-5 (Zones)
50T-11 (Zones)
50T-17 (Zones)
50T-19 (Zones)
50T-25, Dealer 20
50T-28 (Zones)
50T-29 (Zones)
50T-30 (Zones)
50T-39, Dealer 31 (Index)
50T-40 (Zones) (Index)
50T-42 (Zones)
50T-44 (Zones)
50T-47 (Zones)
50T-48 (Zones)
50T-60 (Zones)

51T-3 (Zones)
51T-10 (Zones)
51T-14 (Zones)
51T-25 (Zones)
51T-36 (Zones)
51T-45 (Zones)
51T-51 (Zones) (Index)
51T-52, Dealer 45 (Index)

52T-5 (Zones)
52T-8 (Zones)
52T-10 (Zones)
52T-11 (Zones)
52T-17 (Zones) (Index)
52T-19 (Zones)
52T-20 (Zones)
52T-30 (Zones)
52T-32 (Zones)
52T-35 (Zones)
52T-38 (Zones)
52T-42 (Zones) (Index)

53T-3 (Zones)
53T-14 (Zones)
53T-27 (Zones) (Index)
53T-28, Dealer 24 (Index)

54T-5 (Zones)
54T-6 (Zones)
54T-8 (Zones)
54T-10 (Zones)
54T-11 (Zones)
54T-13 (Zones)
54T-14 (Zones)
54T-15 (Zones)
54T-17 (Zones)
54T-18 (Zones)
54T-21 (Zones) (Index)

55T-18 (Zones)
55T-22 (Zones)
55T-23 (Zones)
55T-25 (Zones)
55T-26 (Zones)
55T-28 (Zones)
55T-28 (Zones)
55T-29 (Zones)
55T-55, Dealer 46 (Index)
55T-56 (Zones) (Index)

56T-11 (Zones)

As you can see, many of these missing issues were sent to Zone offices only - NOT dealers. As such, the Zone issues may be hard to find, but they often contain good info. Meanwhile, ALL Dealer issues are needed for 1945, 1946, and 1947.

If you have original issues of any of these missing documents and can provide them for scanning, plase contact BigKev.

Now, I'm wondering exactly where Technical Letters left off. We have only one example (here), from 1915, and I've seen other examples published, elsewhere, as late as 1937. However, that would have left quite a gap until STBs came into being.
