Chaps,

How can I stop fuel from running out of the air intake on the carb when I shut the engine off? (1930 Detroit Lubricator)

As you know I am currently fighting a battle with the generator and doing all sorts of "sparky" tests but with the constant stop-start that is required, this is getting dangerous!

If you are just running off the vacuum tank, I'd suspect the needle and seat need replacement, or the float is mis-adjusted or has a leak. If you're running off a direct-feed electric pump, the pressure is too high; the DL is meant to operate on the gas feed pressure of the gravity head from the S-W taml to the carb, an electric pump will overwhelm it. There's a pretty informative thread over on AACA forums about the issues of using an electric pump with updraft carbs designed to feed off vacuum fuel tanks.

Thanks OD - I thought it was likely to be that x?@/! pump again!!

It occured to me that if I switch the pump off and then let the engine idle for a minute or so it will relieve the pressure...... and indeed it does!

Problem not solved but averted

If you're using the electric pump to fill the vacuum tank, then fill it and shut the electric off - the vacuum tank will probably have enough supply to feed the engine for 5 or 10 minutes.

Electric pumps and gravity-feed updrafts carbs = a poor (and potentially dangerous) combination.

Check any carburestor bowl vent and gas tank cap vent for obstruction such as dirt.
