It is sometimes confusing as there is a lot of seemingly authoritative advice on the interwebs which is actually not properly thought out or just plain wrong.

Sadly, very true. Some of the advice is (to paraphrase Randy Berger) worth exactly what you paid for it - zero.

Thank u for the update and glad that the generator is no longer in question. So now it's on to the regulator study. Note however that there are the TWO different "types" of regulators.

Keep us posted on your findings.

IIRC from some other thread, there was a sheet metal screw used to hold the Bosch regulator to the generator. Such screw had ruined the field coil windings?????? Did the generator shop rewind the field coil or how what was the outcome/fix for that potential problem????

Packard V8, you recall that this isn't really a regulator in the traditional (post 1937) sense in that it has no amperage control - the adjustment for amp output by the 3rd brush only varies the output, but no variation based on the load or demand on the system. That's why daytime driving with the lights on was so common in that era - folks didn't want to overcharge the battery and also didn't want to stop, open the hood, and turn down the 3rd brush, so they just added some demand to the system.

I set my 3rd brush to make the ammeter just barely (1 or 2 amps) positive at road speed with the headlamps on so I can drive as long as I wish at night. If I do extended daytime driving I just put the headlamps on. In 46 years of driving this car I've never had to service the cutout control or the generator other than to install a set of brushes. Battery life is typically 8 or more years, so this method is well-proven.

The specialist actually repaired the damage done by the self-tapper screws, and re-bound the coils with new string, replaced the bearings, brushes and all cables, cleaned and re-finished all surfaces.... and replaced the offending screws with period brass slotted machine screws! Cost to me was ?250 ($412) which is the going rate but turnaround was 1 week whereas other shops quoted 9 weeks!!

From my research it seems that many cars has a high/low charging switch which either removed or added extra resistance into the field circuit, thereby increasing or decreasing the current offered up. This was often part of the headlamp switch so that when the lights were turned on, the generator automatically provide the additonal current needed.

Why do you think Packard failed to incorporate this system when other marques of the period did?

EDIT: Altho the link is refering to ALTERNATORS the same concept applies to generators and there mite be other websites more applicable to generators than alternators.

Gobs of specifications and service information on everything electrical including the various old style generator controls, Delco, Owen-Dyneto, Westinghouse, Leece-Neville, Ford, Bosch, AutoLite etc. in such period publications as Chiltons and Standard Auto-Electricians Manuals. The last-named (I have edition T) is an outstanding reference for cars from the teens to 1934, highly recommended for owner's of that era vehicle, keep an eye out for one if you have that vintage vehicle.
