I have a 38 and it doesn't have a plate but rather a decal. If you hold a light at just the right angle you can even make out 4 or 5 of the numbers. In order to solve any future problems I punched the numbers into the frame rail by the steering box myself.

Phil, are you aware that the decal has also been reproduced? Still, it would be a shame to remove any portions of the existing one. At least with replacement metal plates we can (and should) save the original ones when installing a repro - without it the car's true identify can always be questioned.

You might consider a repro decal and place it elsewhere on the cowl, retaining what's left of the original.
