Greetings fellow Packard addicts

I have a 54 clipper with ultramatic drive and oil is leaking out of the speedo cable , I have checked the level according to the service manual which is " run the engine in neutral for 2 minutes at 800 rpm , then stop the engine and check within a minute " and it reads low of the mark . The box is performing well apart from the leak but given the leak is via the speedo cable , I'm thinking the oil level is to high . Have I missed something or done something wrong ?

I assume this is not a gear start tranny. In which case I suggest that the spacer with the grooves that sandwiches the speedometer drive gear just in front of the tailshaft is in wrong way round. There was a Service Counselor about this, which I'm sure Howard will locate in about one heartbeat, tho they were addressing fluid coming out of the vent.

Fortunately this can be corrected without removing the trans, just the tailshaft. Might want to be sure the drain hole in the speedo driven gear adapter is clear and facing downwards.
