The bolt that goes through the "t" both holds it on the rear axle and also acts as a vent for the rear axel. Without the vent, the pressure from heat generated in the axle may blow gear oil out past the inner seals washing the grease away from the wheel bearings.

I am sure those specials Tees are out there available in parts caches for not a lot of money.

Thanks, I couldn't see how the T was attached and the vent puzzeled me a bit, but the rear end vent make good sense. It is kind show stopping when it appears to be a unit for the brakes , but is a dual purpose set up. Now I can pull the unit and get the small piece of the fitting out.

Just unscrew the vent bolt, and the "tee" will come loose.

Here are some pics when I did the one on my '54 Clipper. I would run some brake clean though the vent hole bolt to make sure it's not gummed up after you remove it.

Thanks even more, a picture makes it almost s foolproof task. With this kind of info it would be very hard to drop out from completing my Clipper. This eliminates a lot of frustration that will cause many to give up on project.

I went over your blog and listed by page the areas I was getting prepared to work on in the next year. When I did the wheel cylinder and took off the brake parts , I went to the brake areas and checked the set up pictures to be sure everything was reinstalled correctly. It is a big help to have the references, the shop manual assumes a lot of prior experience.

The shop manual assumes that you are already mechanic, which I definatly am not. So I had the same issues. I got lots of good information out of both a Motor's Repair and Glenn's repair manual and also asking lots of questions in the web forums. You can find the repair manuals pretty cheap on eBay.

Fred, yes, but not the Packard shop manuals. The Factory Training manuals which are hear on the website cover a lot of the general theory and practical application information.
