My '38 Packard at some time in the past had the 282 engine swapped out for a 288. Does the 288 have the same firing order as the 282?

Yes, 1-6-2-5-8-3-7-4. All Packard straight eights except for the 1st and 2nd series (1923-1926) have the same firing order, as do just about all other in-line eights with few exceptions.
