I have a 1939 cast iron head in my possession. The head is surfaced and good to go. I will be smoothing it out and installing it soon. This 39 head has been drilled for the 35, 36 block. The 39 cooling holes will be blocked by my 35 head gasket.
I am confident this will solve my compression leak problems. The 1935 aluminum head was full of old repairs and problems. I will miss how light is is. Thank You for all the advice. Andy Attach file: (14.26 KB) (12.13 KB) (10.00 KB)

Today I spent 3 hours working on the head and removed all of the rough casting marks. After I smoothed out the head I etch primed it. I will apply epoxy primer then sand until the head is smooth before I paint it. I found the brass square head plug at Pep Boys, and the water inlet studs at Orchard Supply Hardware.

Hopefully the head hasn't been milled or surfaced more than once or twice. Am assuming the valves have the same tight clearance on the 35 engines as the later engines. If so, and the history of the head is unknown, if you haven't already I think I would make sure the valves clear before investing a lot of time on the head. IIRC, it was last year someone found out the hard way that valve clearance can be a big issue when changing heads.

The points you bring up are extremely valid.. The head is in spec, it was checked against the head that was removed. I will have no clearance issues with my valves.
Thank You for bringing these issues up.

I was able to put primer on the head today, I will sand it tomorrow and then determine if another coat of primer will be needed before paint.

Don't forget to clean the paint off the base to bare metal where the distributor mounts, the base platform and the bolt holes are how the distributor gets its electrical ground.
